The Foundry Hoefler & Frere-Jones has released an absolutely beautiful wide font called Idlewild. As they describe it, Idlewild is “an industrious, combining space-age optimism with the confidence and composure of a master craftsman. We could see the typeface among the realm of satisfying things, objects designed not merely to be used but to be enjoyed: a well-balanced knife, a performance engine; the tool that fits the hand just so.”
And why do I think this is interesting? Because the guys behind H&FJ know what they are doing. Their previous font families have been a blast. We’ve seen them everywhere. Knockout, Gotham, Tungsten… all of them are beautiful, strong fonts. It seems logic to complement their portfolio with an extra wide font and I’m a 100% sure we will start seeing a lot of designs using it very soon.
