Three teams are battling to avoid relegation on the final day of the Spanish Premier League, while Real Madrid have their last chance to polish up before taking on Liverpool for the European Cup.

Madrid clinched their 35th La Liga title three weeks ago. Since then, in three more or less meaningless games, coach Carlo Ancelotti has rotated his squad to keep his players cool while reducing the risk of injury.

Madrid host Real Betis on Friday to close out the season at the Santiago Bernabéu, which have enjoyed three spectacular Champions League last-16 comebacks. Victories over Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and, most recently, Manchester City earned Madrid a place in the final on May 28 in Paris.

Granada, Mallorca and Cadiz will compete to see which one will end up in the unwanted 18th place and join already relegated Levante and Alavés.

Cadiz is the most threatened by the drop and will have to revise Granada or Mallorca to save itself on the wire. Granada have 37 points and Mallorca and Cadiz have 36. Mallorca hold the tiebreaker with Cadiz on their head-to-head record.

All three play their matches on Sunday at the same time.

When Granada host Espanyol, one win will be enough to stay in the top flight. Espanyol, who play under an interim manager, have won just once in 18 away matches in the league.

“If we start thinking about what happens in other games, it will be a mistake. We have earned the right to control our destiny,” said Granada defender Víctor Díaz. “We have to stay calm, play with the good pressure and not go crazy.”

Mallorca visit Osasuna looking for a win to stay up.

“We rely on ourselves to get the three points. If we get them in Pamplona, we won’t need help from anywhere else,” said Mallorca defender Jaume Costa. “We know it will be difficult because experience tells us that Osasuna are always a fighting team and they will want to finish the season well in front of their fans.”

Cadiz visits Alavés who needs a win and one of his rivals loses.

CONFERENCE LEAGUE SQUARE

Villarreal or Athletic Bilbao will finish in seventh place and earn the Europa Conference League spot.

Villarreal are one point ahead of Bilbao. Villarreal play Barcelona on Sunday, while Bilbao are at Sevilla.

The Champions League places have been locked by Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Sevilla. Betis and Real Sociedad will go to the Europa League.
