Frenkie de Jong wants to join Manchester City

Frenkie de Jong would have a priority to join Manchester City instead of Manchester United if he leaves Barcelona this summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Frenkie de Jong favors a move to Manchester City instead of Manchester United in the summer transfer window if he is forced to leave Barcelona. The Dutch midfielder is likely to receive a higher salary from Manchester United but favors the better project.

Frenkie de Jong has been through a tough time at Barcelona since joining from Ajax in July 2019. While the 25-year-old has been one of the most reliable performers in the Blaugrana for the past three years, the Catalan giants have blown hot and cold over this period.

The Dutch international has made 138 appearances for Barcelona so far, with 13 goals and 17 assists. But de Jong faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou as Barcelona could decide to take advantage of him in the summer transfer window to balance their books and fund the moves at the same time. Such a situation caught the attention of Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manchester United’s interest stems from the non-existent future of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba at Old Trafford. While Matic has already confirmed he will leave Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, Pogba is likely to leave Manchester United as a free agent when his contract expires next month.

The Red Devils therefore need to invest in a top-notch midfielder in the summer transfer window, with de Jong becoming a viable target. But de Jong will prefer to join Manchester City over Manchester United, with the report claiming he prioritizes sporting project over the riches on offer in a contract.

That said, recent reports have claimed that Manchester City may not pursue a move for de Jong in the summer transfer window. But should the Barcelona midfielder be a target for the Premier League champions, he could potentially take Fernandinho’s place in the squad following the Brazilian’s exit from the Etihad.

Many reports claimed that de Jong was ready to snub Manchester United to stay at Barcelona. But if things go well, his priority will be to join Manchester City, although it’s unclear whether the Citizens will go on the offensive for the Barcelona midfielder in the summer transfer window.
