Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas bonded over veggie burgers in the ’90s during the ‘healthy era’

But in a new interview with Peoplethe 48-year-old opens up about her acting debut and the one healthy meal she cooked with her friend Antonio Banderas that really helped her.

    Nearly 30 years ago, Cruz and Banderas, now 61, were introduced through a mutual friend, according to People. At the time, Cruz was studying English and Banderas was shooting philadelphia cream.

    “We were curious and full of life,” Banderas said. People.

    During these early years of friendship, Cruz often cooked for Banderas. “I was in a very healthy period,” she said. People. “I was making these amazing veggie burgers and buying ingredients from D’Agostino, my favorite supermarket.”

    Cruz described those years as “magical” and added, “I was really blown away and happy with everything that happened to Antonio. I remember going to the premiere of philadelphia cream because he invited us. It got me thinking, like, ‘maybe it’s possible [for me].'”

    Now the actors remain close friends and live a few blocks from each other in New York’s Greenwich Village, according to People. But despite a strong friendship, the two actors have rarely been cast in the same films. But the two actors he hires, Félix (Banderas) and Iván (Oscar Martínez) do not quite get along. The director, Lola (Cruz) sets up a series of bizarre exercises to break the rivalry of the actors.

    It’s not the first time that Cruz talks about his healthy habits. In a 2017 interview with Squirethe actress mentioned that she hardly drinks and in a 2011 interview with Mirrorthe star revealed that she follows a Mediterranean diet.

    “I love Spanish food. My diet is the Mediterranean diet, which is good food. I eat well, but I try to eat healthy,” she said at the time. She also added that she kept herself in shape by dancing four hours a day, which stems from her training as a ballerina at a young age and once credited Bikram yoga with the “complete change” in her body.

    “I try to avoid dairy products and sugar, and I can’t eat gluten because I have a big intolerance. I eat lots of quality fruits, vegetables, and protein from free-range animals. I also drink liters of water now, which I didn’t. I hardly drink alcohol and quit smoking years ago,” she previously said. Good morning!.
