Pharmactive strengthens its sustainable development policy

Pharmactive eco-management protocol obtains ISO approval as it promotes biodiversity and rural workforce

MADRID, January 10, 2022 / PRNewswire / – Pharmactive Bioactive, SLU Unveils Long-Term Sustainability Program Focusing on Fair Trade, Boosting Local Female Workforce, Reducing Energy Use and Waste Through Recycling, and Promoting cultures that support biodiversity. The company has certified its environmental management system according to ISO 14001: 2015. The efforts are part of the company’s zealous efforts to keep its operations in harmony with the fabric of the natural environment and to support local rural communities.

Pharmactive cements its sustainable sourcing and production protocols while retaining full control of its supply channels to offer its customers high quality certified organic plants of ethical origin. This is particularly evident in both its flagship affron® saffron extract and its ABG +® range of aged black garlic products. The company has obtained two patents for its innovative green extraction processes for these plants.

As part of its strong environmental policy, the producers of botanical ingredients have devised a long-term contract farming plan to strengthen the local economy and the workforce in remote areas of the Castilla-La region. Mancha from Spain and promote the preservation of Spain’s cultural heritage.

“Repopulate empty Spain”

Pharmactive’s saffron is grown on site and cultivated in their private fields nestled in the picturesque rural community of Castilla-La-Mancha, Spain. Its contract farming support program is designed to secure the income and livelihoods of farmers living in the sparsely populated provinces of this region. In return, farmers must engage in traditional and ecological farming and harvesting practices defined by the company.

Spain is dotted with rural areas nicknamed “empty Spain“Because of the abandonment by the populations of these cities to seek better employment opportunities in the big metropolises”, explains Julia diaz, Pharmacist Marketing Manager. “Castile is considered an important site of the ancient agrarian cultural heritage of Spain, yet she suffers from this ghost town syndrome. As a result, the government is putting in place incentives to attract people to the area, and we have deployed our initiatives to try to help our government turn the tide. “

Beyond its business of negotiating attractive compensation plans and labor contracts with farmers, Pharmactive’s carefully designed program essentially ensures that farmers can sell their full crop each year creating demand. The company is also working to promote employment prospects for women in the region. For example, harvesting saffron requires manual picking. Likewise, the delicate stigmas should also be separated from the flowers by hand. The experienced hands of local elderly women are employed to completely separate the stigmas from the flower, avoiding the use of machinery. A secondary advantage is that the method does not require any energy consumption and does not cause waste emissions. In addition, unemployed elderly women living in these suburbs also have the opportunity to contribute their know-how while keeping an ancestral tradition alive.

Giving back to the earth

The company adheres to the Spanish agricultural tradition of “Barbecho”. It designates periods of fallowing of its private fields, allowing the earth to rejuvenate itself and to restore its organic matter. This fallow is applied every six to eight years. “This practice has a positive impact through multiple mechanisms,” explains Jean-Marie Raymond, CEO of Pharmaactive. “It enriches the ecosystem, promotes biodiversity and benefits pollinating insects. It also protects endangered species, such as several native steppe birds, and helps naturally control pests, fungi and weeds. In addition, this ancient practice gives us a way to maintain the Earth so that it can continue to support us. The designation of origin Castilla-La-Mancha encourages avoiding the use of phytosanitary products in the cultivation of saffron and favors the use of natural fertilizers.

From farm to shelf

Pharmactive has also certified its environmental management system to ISO standards. This certification is used to approve the proactivity of the company by ensuring that all its operations, from agriculture to extraction through distribution, are eco-responsible.

“Such controlled processes allow Pharmactive to ensure the organic quality of its locally grown ingredients, helping the brands it serves to stay green,” adds Raymond. “The garlic from our certified organic ABG + is grown just two hours from where it is aged and processed in Madrid, which minimizes the environmental impact of transport. “

“We are committed to developing a fair and lasting relationship with the communities involved in the sourcing and processing of saffron,” adds Diaz. “Pharmactive’s operations are based on strong principles of respect for the environment and a desire to contribute to the quality of life of the communities we work with and the consumers we serve.”
