The Support the Arts Reaching Students (STARS) series returns to the Vilar Performing Arts Center for the school year and will feature six free educational performances designed for elementary and secondary school students on stage by April.
The series was founded in 1998 by Pat and Pete Frechette, and over the past 23 years has featured an array of genres of performing arts, from dance and theater to world music, adapted kindergarten through eighth grade students.
Each of the performances is designed to be a fun and engaging artistic experience that also touches on important educational themes, such as bullying, cultural awareness, or how to deal with difficult homework.
This year, the STARS series kicked off on September 23 with musician and storyteller David Gonzalez, who shared colorful stories from the Caribbean, South America and the Bronx while incorporating accessible Spanish lessons. Multicultural group “Hot Peas’ N Butter” performed their signature combination of traditional Latin music, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz, bluegrass, country and rock which won numerous awards and was featured on Nick Junior. .
The month of October kicked off with a daytime broadcast of Schoolhouse Rock Live !, which brought the classic educational film to life with artists presenting the hits we all love, like “Conjunction Junction†and “Just a Billâ€, at a new generation of learners.

The Jarabe Mexicano quintet celebrates DÃa de los Muertos
This Wednesday, October 27, the STARS series continues with a timely celebration of DÃa de los Muertos, led by the Jarabe Mexicano quintet. The band play on folk string instruments and percussion, and tell stories with harmonized voices in Spanish and English. For this performance, they will commemorate their deceased loved ones in the DÃa de los Muertos tradition, as well as popular icons like Ritchie Valens, Bob Marley and Juan Gabriel. The recommended age range for students is grade four and above.
Jarabe Mexicano includes a study guide downloadable from the Vilar Performing Arts Center website that describes each instrument, genre, and musical element they incorporate into their performance. It also includes a references page that provides an overview of the cultural and aesthetic skills that students acquire during their performance.
The group is officially endorsed as cultural ambassadors by the Mexican Consulate in the United States, and their Wednesday show will highlight the importance of family ties across time and space while illustrating the power of cultural remembrance for them. Tickets for the show cost $ 15 for adults and $ 12 for children, and are available for purchase on the Vilar Performing Arts Center website. Proof of vaccination is not required for STARS performances, but face coverings will be required for all participants.
The next STARS performance is Thursday, December 16, and will bring the Dallas String Quartet on stage for a Christmas-themed performance. From now on, the shows will take place once a month until the beginning of April.

DSQ Electric

DSQ Electric is an international musical sensation where Mozart meets Rihanna and Bach meets Bon Jovi. The Dallas String Quartet brings a fusion of classical and contemporary music on traditional and electric strings. DSQ Electric has performed internationally as well as “at home†for US presidents, professional sports organizations and more. DSQ Electric will perform at VPAC on Thursday, December 16.
Yale Whiffenpoofs

Each year, 14 senior Yale students are selected to be part of the Whiffenpoofs, the oldest and most well-known a cappella college group in the world. On Friday January 7, the Whiffenpoofs perform at the VPAC.
The queen’s designers
Thursday February 10 | 12:30 p.m.
The Queen’s cartoonists play music from classic cartoons and contemporary animation. The performances are synchronized with the video projections of the original films, and the group leads the audience through a world of virtuoso musicality, multi-instrumental chaos and comedy. Goitsé

Goitse, pronounced “go-wit-cha”, is an informal Gaelic Irish greeting meaning “come here”. The popular, multi-award-winning quintet Goitse has become a leader of the new generation of traditional Irish ensembles and performs on Thursday March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day!), At VPAC.
Play by plane

Playing By Air captivates audiences with a joyful fusion of music, juggling and circus in which traditional theatricality meets absurd comedy. The award-winning artists presented a performance with an infectious attitude of expressive play and creativity. The name Playing By Air is a pun based on the musical concept of ‘playing by ear’ and highlights the elements of the show: fun, humor, music, creativity, improvisation and filling the air with objects. ruffles.
