Transfer Deadline Day LIVE: Man Utd could let 5 players leave, Liverpool after second striker and Chelsea last

Moyes confident of signing Marseille defender

David Moyes is confident of bolstering West Ham’s defense ahead of tonight’s deadline with the £19m snap of Marseille defender Duje Caleta Car.

As revealed by Mirrorfootball, the Irons boss has made strengthening his backline a priority after a late loss to Manchester United, preceded by a shock loss to Leeds, which severely damaged West Ham’s top four.

West Ham believe they have agreed a deal worth around £15m for Caleta-Car, 25, with an additional £4m in bonuses.

The Croatian international is 6ft 4in and has played 20 times for his country.

He was part of the team that finished runners-up to France at the 2018 World Cup and was chased by Wolves and a string of continental clubs.

West Ham had a loan-to-own offer rejected earlier this month by club chairman Pablo Longoria. Marseille have only ever been interested in a permanent contract.

But Moyes is a big fan of Caleta-Car’s authority and defensive discipline.

With West Ham still in the Europa League and FA Cup and competing for the top four, an improvement in their backline – despite their need for another striker – was seen as paramount.

West Ham have seen their Champions League ambitions sapped with the concession of 31 goals so far this season – the worst record in the top six and only the second worst in the Premier League top ten.
